Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas are unrivaled for their beautiful, long-lasting blooms — and many varieties are easy to grow here in the mountains. We have planted and evaluated almost 200 varieties at Arborcrest.

Hydrangeas are deciduous shrubs, and there are several types. A few we've grown include:

  • Hydrangea paniculata (Panicle Hydrangeas), generally the hardiest and easiest to grow. We've tested over 40 varieties of Panicle Hydrangeas, and most have done very well.

  • Hydrangea macrophylla (Bigleaf Hydrangeas), harder to grow in our area. A bitter winter can cause the plant to die in the winter, in which case you'll need to cut it to the ground in early spring. We've tested almost 70 varieties of Bigleaf Hydrangeas, and have found some that do well.

  • Hydrangea quercifolia (Oakleaf Hydrangeas), a shade-loving variety. We've tested almost 20 varieties and have found some that do well.

  • We've also tested several Hydrangea serrata (Mountain Hydrangeas), Hydrangea arborescens (Smooth Hydrangeas) and Hydrangea anomala ssp. petiolaris (Climbing Hydrangeas).

Most of our Hydrangeas begin blooming in July. Some flowers change color as the summer progresses, and are ornamental even as the blooms turn brown in the winter.
