Zero Tolerance
If I could only give one tip for a new gardener wanting to have a beautiful satisfying garden,it would be that you absolutely must adopt a "Zero Tolerance For Weeds " policy. Choose your weapon--hand weeding, mulching, Roundup or a combination of all three--but it is imperative that you eliminate all weeds before they go to seed. The problem with ignoring even one weed is that if you allow it to set seed then next year you may find several hundred weeds in the area where you only had one last year. Then discouragement sets in and gardening is no longer fun. Make your garden smaller if you can't find the time to keep the weeds out. A tiny weed free garden will be much more rewarding than a larger one overrun with weeds.
